W. Somerset Maugham’s 1926 play focuses on Constance, a modern woman who resolves to live independently after discovering her husband’s affair. I looked to contemporary art and architecture of the era, with a particular emphasis on the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements, to inform the costume design. Throughout the play, Constance’s costumes shift from yellow to red, from soft and delicate to strong and geometric to illustrate her evolution into a truly modern, independent woman.
